The Lego site has an illustrated list of parts in the Mechanisms Set 
(979632). Go to the Lego store site, search on that part number, then 
click "Element Survey" under the picture of the kit, to download a 
parts inventory.

It looks to me like mostly standard-issue Technics parts. There are 
some triangular and circular blue sheet pieces, but those aren't even 
used in the four models illustrated in the ad for the Pneumatic 
Add-On Set.

Seems to me you could get the pneumatics set, then if there are one 
or two specific pieces you need, you could follow Greg's advice to 
get them from Bricklink, and still save most of the $85.
