We also do the iron on transfers.  I just ask that the kids create 
their own art, not use clip-art or downloaded images.  Some have been 
hand-drawn, others were done on the computer.  The team talks about what 
they want their logo to be, so it is a collaborative effort and they are 
all really proud of the shirts.  ( I am usually lucky enough to have a 
parent volunteer to do the iron-on transfers for us.

My son's FRC team designs their own shirts and uses customink.com.  The 
shirts looked great and held up well, but seemed to me to be pretty 
expensive per shirt.

The give-aways are nice because they get kids from different teams out 
talking to one another.  If I have a kid who is really shy, I'll send 
them off in pairs to do their give-aways.
