Donna,
The rules document contains diagrams showing each "area" of the mat
that is involved in the missions--be sure to look at those diagrams,
as there are some subtleties important for the scoring. The research
area is defined as the ice barrier bounding the Southwest corner of
the mat, plus the mat bounded by it.
One subtlety is that the "pink grid area" includes the wee bit of
gray wall on which two white/red people are standing.
