Just to share what I do on this subject, probably this does not help you
but gives another perspective:
This is our 3rd year.
Since we started I prorate the cost of the brick and Lego sets (nothing
else such as field mat and other consumables) assuming a lifetime of 3
years. Then each year I split the cost (a third) among the number of
team members, that way each team member pays a reasonable amount but
proportional to the actual "usage". The first year we had only one set.
We bought a 2nd set for the second year, we did not buy a 3rd one for
this year.

We are partially funded but had to cover 100% the cost of the Bricks +
Sets myself, I get some of that back each year (a third); this year I
will get paid back for 100% of the 1st set and will have one more year
to go to recover what I paid for the second one. I am kind of financing
the team in that sense but hey, it is for a great cause :-).
The team owns the bricks and sets. I do not know what we will do when
the team ceases operations, I guess we will "raffle it" among all team
members that ever were part of it at the end of our "Reunion
Celebration". :-)

Go LEGO!!
