Recognizing that there can be variations in the ways that the robot interacts with mission models (for example, Saturday I saw the ramp lever depressed so that the syringe was perfectly balanced at the point just before release--one more millimeter and the syringe would have rolled), if a team thinks that a mission model may have malfunctioned, they should ask the referee to check its operation.
Referees learn what is typical behavior from the models. Consistent failures are taken care of as soon as possible, but some models will get a little bit out of adjustment over the course of many matches, and not every model is readjusted frequently. Input from the team about totally unexpected behavior helps the referee determine what should have occurred.
Teams shouldn't expect micrometer precision at a tournament, of course (see rule 31, Variability,) but they can expect to have a table in good working order. If there is doubt about the operation of a model, the team can help the referee express that doubt. On the other hand, robot actions that are not highly consistent during practices may have a variety of outcomes during competition, too. The results are jointly determined by robot action, the functioning of the models, and conditions on the field.
