Dear All,
I am an alum of Wash U's PhD program. While there I received a four-year
fellowship for women given to approximately eight women each year spread
over the various graduate and professional programs. During social
engagements and honorary dinners tied to this fellowship I learned more
about the source of the funding for these fellowships. Montecello College,
in Alton, Illinois, closed and the trustees used the money to fund these
fellowships. Many of the trustees for this fellowship money were and
continue to be from Alton, as is Phyllis Schafly.
At one point, when we were asked to attend a dinner with the trustees, one
of the older male trustees, commented, "You women fellows are such fine
ornaments to the institution." !!!
My point is that Wash U has received a lot of money tied to the Phyllis
Schafly crowd. That is probably why they wish to honor her.
Peggy
