Nicole - I think bell hooks is a good person to read for the responsibilities of women as intellectuals, and how this affects our relationships with our families and communities.   I also wrote an article about teaching women to practice philosophy that addresses these issues - it's in a book edited by James Roth and Tim Riordan, Disciplines as Frameworks for Learning. Two other books that might interest you are Geoffrey Canada's Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun about addressing urban violence, and Albert Lubrano's  Limbo: Blue Collar Roots, White Collar Dreams, about working class people moving into academia and the professions. Subject: Readings on murders of youths and also on responsibility of itellectuals



Hello All
I am looking for any readings on the murders of youths within families or even within communities.  I have a good part of the non academic urban writings but i need to see if this is something that has been addressed within ethics or philosophy, ive found nothing aside from Fanon, but that doesnt always mean much. In particular I am interested in anything about any programs for the remaining youths in the family, I know they are out there, specifically if anyone knows of any in Ohio I would be very appriciative. 

I am also looking for readings on the responsibilities of intellectuals.  I LOVE what Sartre says about it in Adeix but I need to find more that is specific to intellectuals, I am not looking for anything that will let us off the hook at all, only for things that constructively give at leasta guidleine for being responsible to others while moving about in the middle class where everything is so sheltered.  If anyone has anything specifically related to ones family it would be perfect.  This is for both my work and my family life, I had a 15 year old cousin murdered 2 years ago, a 17 year old last month and a 17 year old last night.  There must be other philosophers who have been in this situation or one like it who have written something about how to balance the overindulged life of writing with the stark reality of real life that they are sheltered from.
