The Center for Advanced Studies at LMU Munich is a forum for intensive
international academic exchange. Its purpose is to promote cooperation
with national and international Visiting Fellows who work closely on
collaborative projects with LMU professors. In order to intensify
cooperation between researchers at LMU Munich and leading experts from
other universities, the Center has set up a major program, the CAS
Research Groups.

The CAS Research Group “Relationships in Transition: Normative
Challenges“ is initiated by Professor Dr. Monika Betzler (Chair for
Practical Philosophy and Ethics, LMU) and will commence its work in
October 2020.

The CAS Research Group will investigate the transitional processes
involved in many close relationships and the normative demands they
place on the parties involved. Relationships not only begin, but also
develop, change, and sometimes come to an end. It is these transitions
that pose particular normative challenges: what do parties owe each
other during these processes of transition? Two types of transitions
will be of particular interest (though not exclusively): (i) divorce
as the transition from a romantic relationship to the end of that
relationship; and (ii) adolescence as the transition from a
parent-child rearing relationship to another type of relationship,
namely the relationship between parents and their children on the
brink of adulthood, who are then to be respected as fully autonomous.

By explaining and justifying the particular associative duties that
might emerge from these transitions, the project hopes to provide
normative guidance as to how to manage these transitional processes
and maintain the moral integrity of the parties involved.

The CAS Research Group will bring together internationally renowned
researchers who are invited to the LMU Munich to contribute to the
Group’s research. Applications are welcomed from all areas of
practical philosophy as well as from psychologists and sociologists
(among others) working empirically on questions pertaining to
relationships in transition.

Both senior and junior (postdoc) researchers are encouraged to apply.
The Center for Advanced Studies will provide financial and
organizational support for visits of between four weeks and three
months during the period between October 2020 and September 2021.
Travel and accommodation will be paid for and an expense allowance or
other compensation (according to individual agreement) will be
provided to cover operating costs. Guests will receive a workspace in
the Center and will have access to all its facilities. Visiting
researchers will find an open and stimulating research environment
allowing to discuss these themes together and potentially co-author
papers on issues pertaining relationships in transition.

Applications should consist of a brief outline (1-2 pages) of the
expertise, field of exchange and intended contribution to the CAS
Research Group. Applications should also contain relevant credentials
and a résumé including a list of the most recent publications. In
order to strengthen the role of women in research, female scholars are
strongly encouraged to apply.
