Flint, MI has been in the news quite a bit recently, with news of the poisonous drinking water and recent announcements that the water rates (already the highest in the U.S.) are expected to double, if not triple, in the next year or so.  In light of these events, and the complex medical, educational, social, political, environmental and legal issues they raise, the Center for Cognition and Neuroethics has decided to bring the conversation right to Flint, and we are hosting a two day international conference with the theme Clean Water.  Below is additional information about the conference and proposal submission instructions.

Water is vital.  Access to clean, safe, affordable water is a basic human right.  Or is it? Some estimate that one billion people lack access to safe water.  Moreover, some have estimated that within just ten years more than half of the world population will face water-based vulnerability.  What are the costs to us as individuals, and to a society as a whole, when we decide that providing clean water to ourselves and others is not a social priority?  What problems have such decisions created for our children, and their children and to the environment as a whole?  What is the best explanation of the factors that result in a community finding itself with a water crisis?  What are the most effective responses to such a crisis?  What policies and educational programs are maximally effective to ensure that proper water management is given the emphasis that it requires?  Papers addressing the medical, social, political, legal policy-making significance of water management are welcome.

We welcome submissions from a wide range of disciplines, including philosophy, the social sciences, urban studies and planning, critical studies, law, education, linguistics, the neurosciences, and the pharmaceutical and medical sciences as well as other relevant disciplines and fields. Papers presented at the Clean Water conference will be eligible for inclusion in a proceedings issue of the Journal of Ethical Urban Living (JEUL).  The Journal of Ethical Urban Living is committed to publishing scholarship address the dramatic impact social policies and legal institutions have on the way we live our lives. These effects include not only the development and support of our cognitive capacities, such as how effectively we are able to think, plan, and form critically reasoned beliefs, but also how effectively and freely we can act, engage, and realize our goals. Urban environments are complicated social spaces: they can provide rich resources for fruitful collaborations and they can foster unjust, immoral and unethical hardships that oppress and disenfranchise large segments of a population. From the quality and availability of water, air and food, to employment, educational and cultural opportunities and experiences; from matters of public and private health, safety and security, to the expression of justice, liberty and freedom, urban spaces affect virtually every aspect of daily life. JEUL provides a space where researchers, academics and scholars as well as therapists, clinicians, policy-makers and educators can publish ideas addressing social policies that affect all who live together in modern urban environments. JEUL seeks scholarship that bridges disciplines, and expands the reach of the medical, neuro- and biological sciences, social and human sciences, as well as public policy and service work. JEUL aims to bring together the theoretical and the practical so as to realize a fairer, more just, and more equitable opportunities within the legal, political, social and ethical realms.

The Center for Cognition and Neuroethics promotes both the exploration of the conceptual foundations of the neurosciences and the study of the implications of their advances for society in the legal, political, and ethical realms.
