What a great discussion!
There is no argument from me, Ken, about the complexities and the importance of myths/stories with Sapiens, nor the likelihood of innate neural circuits fostering an innate tendency for religion-like beliefs and practices.
I contend that myths as neurological imperatives based on brain wiring relate to two aspects of our species' cognitive frameworks: the interpretation and sense-making processes required for coherent experiences (conscious and subconscious).
I have little doubt that religious myths are drivers for cultural transformation, whether those changes are adaptive or not.
