Hi TOK Folks,
First, let me thank my doc students, Paulihna, Charles, and Kacey for putting on a useful workshop yesterday.

During the workshop, the question was raised about Stephen Porges' poly vagal nerve theory<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmkG5l7CaGw>. Here is a video with him. Here is a good psych today summary.<https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/neuro-behavioral-betterment/201802/thinking-and-breathing-calm-the-bodys-emergency-response> I am happy to provide more references.

The point was also made that CALM and the general processing of attending to one's body/emotional reactions takes practice. Indeed, this is much of what meditation and other martial arts are about, as well as many psychotherapies. Indeed, the most behavioral skill based approach is called "exposure with response prevention". It refers to how folks build acceptance and tolerance of images and affects they are afraid of by gaining exposure to the feared experience and being "held" so that they can stay present and not "run" (i.e., engage in a safety behavior). Over time, the escape/aversion response will diminish and the person will develop tolerance and habituation. If this is coupled with a sense of mastery and a new narrative of self, then transformational change is in play. This is hard and takes work and a number of sessions to begin to develop the necessary skill set.

For a simple example and technique, here is an exercise<https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/theory-knowledge/201302/potentially-helpful-technique-anxiety-producing-thoughts> I developed. I only recommend this for folks who are feeling relatively secure and have some sense of mastery over their mental health. That is, this is not for folks who are very dysregulated and in the midst of being activated. However, for folks who are doing "ok" have some resources and at the same time, have a nagging thought, image, emotion that they are afraid of, it can be a quick and effective healing process. It is based on the basic principles of exposure and response prevention and cultivating mastery mindset rather than fear based avoidance.

Best,
Gregg
