Yes -- in those days, as the Kaleidoscope "Red Guard" citation
indicates -- there was a sense that the whole world was on fire and
that, necessarily, "we" would have to take over after the flames died
down (today that role is being played by the "transhumanists" &al).
Burn, baby burn . . . !!

https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__en.wikipedia.org_wiki_Transhumanism&d=DwIFaQ&c=eLbWYnpnzycBCgmb7vCI4uqNEB9RSjOdn_5nBEmmeq0&r=HPo1IXYDhKClogP-UOpybo6Cfxxz-jIYBgjO2gOz4-A&m=QAsU6KCmu0Dm6NLLhlYtewVWYqKQ1PeEEeYSKYgmNEI&s=SzkkQ_DyAjReyY1UZK_xyoVZxkzfGXEVVk-AOVQujSg&e=

This was all pretty thoughtless, of course, and none of it would have
happened without *lots* of drugs (which today are called "nootropics,"
along with the attempt to legalize psychedelics &c) -- likewise for
the Situationists (and the Dadaists).

https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__en.wikipedia.org_wiki_Nootropic&d=DwIFaQ&c=eLbWYnpnzycBCgmb7vCI4uqNEB9RSjOdn_5nBEmmeq0&r=HPo1IXYDhKClogP-UOpybo6Cfxxz-jIYBgjO2gOz4-A&m=QAsU6KCmu0Dm6NLLhlYtewVWYqKQ1PeEEeYSKYgmNEI&s=OmnVFMSUSsKbLrVSronHytFz489Fcp7vC10Xruq5qsA&e=

Here's what happened in France (which is missing in the article you
cite). The "left" was quite controlled. Stalinists, Trotskyists,
Maoists &c. They would march and sign petitions but nothing out of
the ordinary ever happened. The Trade Unions had "bought in" and the
students had nowhere to go. This was the *earlier* "paradigm" in
spades. Sartre and Picasso.

LSD was what kicked all this loose. It had been legally available for
psychiatrists from St. Anne's, where Jean Delay used it to explore
"psychotomimetic" conditions starting in the 1950s. Many of those who
later became "heroes" for the 68ers -- like Foucault &al -- were
taking it in the 1950s/60s (thus his "history of madness") but by 1967
it was banned, starting in the US.

https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__en.wikipedia.org_wiki_Jean-5FDelay&d=DwIFaQ&c=eLbWYnpnzycBCgmb7vCI4uqNEB9RSjOdn_5nBEmmeq0&r=HPo1IXYDhKClogP-UOpybo6Cfxxz-jIYBgjO2gOz4-A&m=QAsU6KCmu0Dm6NLLhlYtewVWYqKQ1PeEEeYSKYgmNEI&s=f1r52fs5HSlo8fudgI7eprKq9mYe0EWUhq3i_4Tve9g&e=

Then the KGB stepped in -- no kidding. They managed to supply
pharmaceutical LSD from Spofa in Prague and started using
"underground" groups like the Provos to distribute it in Europe. For
them it was "psycho-chemical warfare" with the intent to disrupt any
support for the Cold War among the young. And when that "blue acid"
was blocked, they supplied the chemical precursor for the
"underground" labs.

https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__en.wikipedia.org_wiki_Provo-5F-28movement-29&d=DwIFaQ&c=eLbWYnpnzycBCgmb7vCI4uqNEB9RSjOdn_5nBEmmeq0&r=HPo1IXYDhKClogP-UOpybo6Cfxxz-jIYBgjO2gOz4-A&m=QAsU6KCmu0Dm6NLLhlYtewVWYqKQ1PeEEeYSKYgmNEI&s=v5_Pp2tM-hBpPSo3jZvZfY6Cs0NWv9kwNJMZRivm16Q&e=

In 1965, Michael Hollingshead took 5000 "hits" of "Czech Acid" (i.e.
KGB) from Tim Leary's Milbrook estate to London to start the World
Psychedelic Center -- which then fueled the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's"
and all that. The Situationists were connected and many of them
joined in. May '68 started in Narbonne and then spread to Paris --
all of it driven by "underground" LSD (supplied by the KGB on behalf
of disrupting the West in the Cold War) . . . !!

https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__en.wikipedia.org_wiki_Michael-5FHollingshead&d=DwIFaQ&c=eLbWYnpnzycBCgmb7vCI4uqNEB9RSjOdn_5nBEmmeq0&r=HPo1IXYDhKClogP-UOpybo6Cfxxz-jIYBgjO2gOz4-A&m=QAsU6KCmu0Dm6NLLhlYtewVWYqKQ1PeEEeYSKYgmNEI&s=fGfpSOnsxVVkNODsZsI93nIV9rHDUMKigpidaHzZDew&e=

In May 1969, Marshall McLuhan was invited to speak to the
Bilderbergers to "explain" what had just happened in France -- along
with Daniel Bell who wrote the "conference document" (asked because he
had published "The End of Ideology" and it seemed that he had
seriously miscalculated). Marshall made a fool of himself and had to
apologize in a letter to Prince Bernhard (now published in his
Letters). In many ways, that was the end of McLuhan's public career.

https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__publicintelligence.net_bilderberg-2Dconference-2D1969_&d=DwIFaQ&c=eLbWYnpnzycBCgmb7vCI4uqNEB9RSjOdn_5nBEmmeq0&r=HPo1IXYDhKClogP-UOpybo6Cfxxz-jIYBgjO2gOz4-A&m=QAsU6KCmu0Dm6NLLhlYtewVWYqKQ1PeEEeYSKYgmNEI&s=LPumhsex2TLi-TfJamzeyoWKHrfXV0665CBgPWCaBEA&e=

What we might call "Post-modernism" was the demarcation from the
earlier "Modernist" paradigm and, in France, it was largely structured
around the merger of Marx and "psychoanalysis" (driven by LSD,
resulting in what Deleuze calls "rhizomes" &c.) Probably the best
account (minus the important details about LSD) on all this is Sherry
Turkle's PhD "Psychoanalytic Politics."

Yes -- in many ways I am a *historian* of those times (which is made
much easier since I lived through it), so thanks for asking . . . <g>

Mark

P.S. Re: Dada &c (which I did not live through), perhaps the best
history is Martin Green's "Mountain of Truth: The Counterculture
Begins -- Ascona 1900-1920," which describes the *effects* of an
earlier paradigm-shift (following previous examples in the 1850s and
1780s -- all driven by new technologies, of which LSD was only one
example, having been Mescaline for the earlier generation).
