No, judges won’t see it that way – it’s not like they’re necessarily reviewing the registration info. Honest. Good thought but no.

As for abuse: sure: “Hey, Johnny always says the wrong thing, we’ll just tell him to keep his mouth shut and tell the judges he’s mute”. But somehow I doubt that would pass muster; it sure wouldn’t qualify as GP!

In addition what if the registration process at the tournament can capture this info. upfront. So that judges never miss it.

Also, could such a process rather than serving the purpose sometimes be misused? Just wondering..

I've asked a similar question before and was told that the coach could just slip a piece of paper to the judges explaining the situation.

I was also in a situation as a judge in which I strongly suspected that the team we were judging presented with several cases of disability. We took the coach aside before he left the room and asked him (broadly) if our assumptions were correct so that we could take it into account in judging.

It didn't alter the ultimate outcome but it made me wish FLL had a special prize category for kids who make it to the tournament in the face of extraordinarily challenging circumstances.

I would suggest that you also advise the tournament director. Not to do anything but to share this with judges that may have your team in their judging rooms.

As a tournament director, we have sever ADHD or autism students brought to my attention in the past. I share with the head judge who shares with the judges for the rooms that the team will be in. It just helps to ensure added patience and awareness to all of the super nice judges that are already excited to meet your teams.

Well said. As a head judge, I'd be upset to think that one of my judges
didn't take this into account. OTOH, if they don't know about it, they could
just think he's not participating. So making it clear through the team would
be great (obviously keeping in mind how sensitive he might be about his
disability).

Have the team tell his story if he can't. Judges are nice and understanding.

We have a student with a learning and speech disability on our FLL team.
This is our second year. Last year, at the tournament, he was
characteristically unable to be as interactive as the other team members,
and I think the judges noticed during Core Values judging. The team really
likes this student, he has made many very important contributions to
attachment designs, and has a rare talented way of building with Legos. He
is a valued member of our team, but I don't know how to show this at the
tournament.

How do I help the team and this student at the tournament? Knowing that he
might not be as able as others to talk about the core values and teamwork he
experiences as a team member, and that he might not be as able to
participate as easily as others during the core values challenge?

Thanks!
