Our team volunteered at the Special Olympics at the beginning of the season
and it made a huge difference in how they respected each other and worked
together as a team throughout the season. After the Special Olympics, they
all wrote paragraphs about what they learned and it really stuck with them
all season. Their paragraphs can be read here -

Even though they did not get to progress this year, I couldn't be more proud
of how they handled themselves as a team. Big thanks to the folks at Bird
HS for a great tournament!

Absolutely you can prepare but not a lot in 2 weeks. It is more like
practice over the whole season. You can talk about the core values and ask
the kids to find ways to convey them/live them outside of the team.

Team building exercises help as well. Discussions of roles, time keeping,
brainstorming, respectful communications etc, followed by team work
exercises and more discussion leads to improved teamwork with at least some
teams.

I actually think you kind of can practice for it in that you can prepare for
it. You can read the FLL Core Values with your team and discuss it. Write
each one on a piece of paper and put them in a basket and let them take
turns drawing one out, read it aloud, and say what they think it means.

You can get books with fun teamwork activities (check your library or just
google them) and do one at the beginning of each practice or when you take a
break.

Talk with the kids about how this experience has been, working on a team,
how do they make decisions, etc.

Read the Core Values rubric yourself on the FLL website and know what this
whole program is intending to impart.

Good luck!

Don't worry about it - they can't plan for it or practice for it. They'll be
given something to do.

What do the kids do during the core values part of the competition?

Another question that comes up frequently! As per the rules you can bring
multiple robots to the tournament but you can only bring one to the
competition table for each round. You cannot swap additional robot bricks,
motors or sensors during a single round.

Can we only use one robot in the tournament?

Can we interchange two robots?
