Lloyd,
  What you describe is not allowable.  It's explicitly prohibited in Rule
23, Aiming:

You may use a frame/"jig" to aim the robot, but its use must be completely
in Base at all times, and you must let go of it prior to
starting/restarting.


  It's also part of a more general prohibition in Rule 20, Sending/Handling
Objects Outside Base, because it sounds like the team would be
"strategically extending" the object out of Base by hand action.


  "Aiming" is a strategic action, so only the robot may cause things to be
outside Base for strategic purposes.  This is different from "Storage"
which is not allowed to have strategic (i.e. points-scoring) consequences
ever.  A "stored" object must be picked up and used entirely within Base
before it can be used for strategic purposes.
