Stuart,

If they can make any kind of a rolling robot and program it to move 
forward and stop, they can complete three missions:  push a ball into 
the reservoir, trigger the storm, and push a minifig to the green 
mountain. With those plus the three gimme levees (assuming the storm 
doesn't clobber one), that's 5+15+10+15=45 points right there. Maybe 
they'd find that fact encouraging.

And the penalties are taken from the levees in Base, so that score 
holds even if their robot doesn't drive backwards back to Base and is 
retrieved by hand each time.
