Jeff,

I too have not touched an EV3, but there were similar problems with some 
of the earlier NXTs.  We had this malfunction and a google search pulled 
some youtube videos on how to fix it.  It turned out the daughter board 
that the buttons made contact with was also attached to the screen.  
 From frequent pressure on the buttons a solder joint that connected 3 
diodes to the screen would crack. Touching a soldering iron to each 
joint fixed the problem.  Your problem may be different, but check the 
web.  Many teams had this problem and if they got the unit from LEGO 
Education they would get a new brick sent to them.  Your unit may still 
be under warranty.
