My 6 person team decided to split into two groups of 3... one to focus on
the robot, and one to focus on the project. We meet at my house once/week
and it's not practical to have all 6 of them doing any one activity. There
just isn't enough room/LEGO to go around. This is my 5th year as a coach,
and the first time we've tried this tactic. I'm a little concerned about
the "everybody has to speak" aspect of the judging, but the kids are 100%
on board with this division. I think it has made the team stronger because
in the end, we will be judged as a team. Both groups need to pull their
weight, and both need to trust that their counterparts pull theirs as
well. They'll all be able to speak in broad terms, but they're not going
to hide this strategy from the judges. It was definitely a conscious
decision and I'll be curious to see how it shakes out.
