While Rule #4 explictly says “LEGO-manufactured Mindstorms” sensors, this was expanded on and covered in great detail by the Robot Game Updates (cf. #14). The short answer is that HiTechnic sensors are not made by LEGO and are disallowed.

All teams should be checking the robot game updates regularly!

Subject: [VADCFLL-L] Competition Approved Sensors

How do officials determine whether or not a sensor may be used in the competition?

There are a couple of vendors like Hitechnic that sell "certified" sensors. LEGO has recently started reselling some of these sensors.

So, if our team was to purchase a gyroscopic sensor, how would the officials determine whether or not that sensor may be used?
