Scott...
I'm not sure what I can do to help, but I'd be happy to help however I can. Just let me know!
As far as getting kids on teams - yes, it's hard and I know many people do not have the resources to start their own team. However, if there are parents that would like to start their own community team and need some help with how to start, I know there are many teams in VA, including our team, that would be more than happy to offer assistance. There would be a couple ways to ask for some help.
First, VA-DC FLL has an Ask-An-Ambassador page where teams can volunteer to help other teams. Take a look to see if there is a team near you (it probably doesn't matter though if you are in close proximity to a team though...any of them will be glad to help). The link is FIRST LEGO League Virginia + Washington, D.C. - Ask an Ambassador.

Second, you can send an email out to this list asking for help and you will have more offers for help than you can manage. :)

Personally, our team would be happy to help anyone considering starting their own team, whether the questions are how to go about starting, programming, robot building, or whatever. Starting a team is not undoable and there is no experience necessary. Don't hesitate to ask for help.

My experience is that the limiting factor aren't kids in the right
geographic area; but rather coaches to start up new teams.  New teams
typically don't have any problems recruiting and filling their
rosters.  Unfortunately, I had to turn away many kids because my team
was pretty full.  I was originally going to stop at 8, but here I am,
with 11!  But I still had to turn away several kids.

What might be helpful is for parents of kids looking for teams to be
matched with each other and start their own teams.

Depends on Coaches, as to how close the person lives and if there is space in the team. I usually maxed out my team (10) to let the kids have the maximum advantage. I would suggest the same to other coaches on this listserv as it also helps kids who don't have teams and also helps the team achive their coummunity outreach (core values) and awareness goal.

>> Are people looking for teams for their kids been successful in finding team in their local areas? It will be interesting to see the outcome of such outreach. I request parents to share views. I usually don't see a response to such posts. I can only hope that parent are finding teams for their kids. My own experience has not been very good. This has been a challenge for newcomers, and in some cases with experienced kids once their team is dissolved and/or they move out to another area. I wonder if FLL has recommendations to engage student and parents into FLL activities and start local teams if parents are willing to help via forums like this? If I understand correctly, northern VA has the most FLL participation worldwide.
