Thank you for the response to my posting. I will certainly consider judging a tournament to get better insight into how the process works. I want to be very clear that I am happy with what my team accomplished in yesterday's event but I am finding it little difficult on why we failed to go the next round. From what I can tell from the Robot performance scores, we scored the best (best of 3) and the next best score is 80-90 points behind us. In my view, we scored pretty high in the other judging areas which is evident from the awards we received. If I understand it correctly, judging components include tangible and intangible evidence e.g behavior at the competition which play part in the overall determination. I am not sure how the quantification for the intangible component is done although I totally agree that teams should exhibit best behavior. This year, I paid so much of focus on developing the team although it was hard with teens sometimes, did
lot of outreach to key stakeholders of our solution and robot game. I think one of the changes that FLL may consider making is to disclose to the teams "behavior" factors as part of the feedback they provide at the end of the tournament and that helps coaches to focus on those aspects as well.

Many thanks to FLL organization, VADCFLL coordinators and volunteers for volunteering their time and effort in spreading STEM activities among communities which is quite evident from the increased enrollment at the competitions.
Kudos to you all for a great tournament!!

Subject: Re: [VADCFLL-L] Question on qualification criteria for state championship

Rama,
Each tournament is allowed a certain number of advancements to the Championship tournament, based on the number of teams in each division at the tournament (so each tournament has a different number that advance).  Eagle Ridge for example was able to advance 3 division I teams and 2 division II teams.

Within the tournament, advancement is based on team performance all-around in the three judging events.  These teams are determined by the judges in a deliberation process which discusses all of the teams and how they did compared to other teams.  There are no true scores in judging anymore (starting last year) and it is now based on performance compared to other teams.  In addition to the judging, teams should have performed in the top ~40% in robot performance (may be different at smaller tournaments where there may only be a few teams in a division).

Teams are not allowed to win more than 1 judged award (with all awards being considered judged with the exception of robot performance which is solely based on the table scores).  This means that once a team has won a Champions award, they cannot win any of the other judged awards.  If there is a 2nd place Champions award given, then the team which receives that award will not be able to get any other judged awards and so on with all awards.

I was not at the tournament so I can't answer for the judges in this case but I can tell you that the judges at all tournaments discuss the teams and how they performed compared to all other teams in each division and pick the top division I and II teams to advance.  With these discussions occurring behind closed doors, it can often be hard to tell exactly how your team performed versus all other teams.

If there are any coaches that would like to get more insight in this process, a GREAT way to do that is to judge at a tournament.  We are a volunteer organization and rely on a ton of volunteers to serve as judges, referees and other volunteers.  If you are interested, please go to http://www.vadcfll.org/volunteer.html for more information and to be matched with a tournament.

Thanks,
Karen

Subject: [VADCFLL-L] Question on qualification criteria for state
championship

We had a fabulous regional tournament at Eagle Ridge MS, Ashhburn today. It was well
organized and the teams had good time. My team participated in Division II
tournamentvand we did very well. My team won 2 first place awards in Project and robot
performance. We scored highest score robot game. Also, we scored high in core values
(30.5/36), 32/36 in robot design, 37/40 in project and yet we failed to secure spot in state
championship. I spoke to Mark Vanderlyn and he explained me that there are other
parameters that play part in qualifying for state such as better score in core values. I would
like to hear from you all to see what's your experience in this situation just for my
undestanding. My team had lot of fun and they are very happy to win 2 awards.

Thanks
