Steve is The Man on this, but I’ll add my $0.02. If the markings aren’t functional or decorative, they’re probably OK. Like, if the team goes nuts making the robot pretty, that’s bad; if you’re labeling parts, you’re OK. I’d try to avoid stickers if possible – maybe stripes/dots?

Here's what the rules have to say about marking your Equipment. From the "Design, Program, Build" page:

*	Use any LEGO-made building parts in their original factory condition.
*	YOU MAY Mark parts for identification in hidden areas.

In the past I've typically interpreted this as not allowing stickers and, at least, discouraging visible markings.

You might be able to coach your team to brainstorm about ways to improve the issue. They might come up with a team way to take notes about how their robot is constructed, and even a clever way to remember which cable goes where.

I'll let coaches talk about their experience and recommendations.

Hi all,

I’m sorry if this question has been answered before. Can we use markers to mark the cables? Or use small stickers on them? We are having difficulty putting the cables back every time we change the battery.

Thanks,

Leyla
