Hi Everyone,

Coincident with this year FLL Nature’s Fury challenge,
it is sad to learn that Typhoon Haiyan has caused massive destruction in the Philippines
and death toll in the thousands.  The
children have learned about force of nature such as hurricane and tornado, but they
might not be that familiar with the terms typhoon or cyclone.  Here is an extract from the NOAA website that
you can share with the kids.

[The only difference between a hurricane, a
cyclone, and a typhoon is the location where the storm occurs.  Hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons are all
the same weather phenomenon; we just use different names for these storms in
different places.  In the Atlantic and
Northeast Pacific, the term “hurricane” is used.  The same type of disturbance in the Northwest
Pacific is called a “typhoon” and “cyclones” occur in the South Pacific and
Indian Ocean.]  (http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/cyclone.html)

The BBC has an interesting article on:  “Typhoon Haiyan impacts a million farmers.”  Production of rice and coconuts hit
dramatically as a result of the typhoon according to the UN's food and
agriculture organization.  Read more: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-24913139

CNN website has an article on “How to help Typhoon
Haiyan survivors” listing charities and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs)
from around the world that are responding to this disaster.  Many are detailed in the article with how
they're providing aid and how you and your team can help them make a difference:  http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/09/world/iyw-how-to-help-typhoon-haiyan/index.html?iref=allsearch
