In addition to everything that has already been said, you do not have to
purchase the EV3 software.  The home edition is free, and although it does
not include the Gyro and Ultrasonic sensor buttons, you can download these
for free from Lego Education.  The Education software does have three
additional sensor buttons, none of which you would use for the FLL and a
couple more advanced blocks...but everything you need for a successful
season, you can download for free.

If you did want to purchase an EV3 (the education set, not the home edition
for the FLL) it would cost about $370 (after shipping).  We sold our NXT's
from last year on Ebay for a decent amount of money, offsetting the costs
of the EV3, and you'd probably end up paying less than $200 for one.
