When I was a coach we asked the participating families to chip in and cover the cost. But there are many companies now that have STEM outreach programs or would otherwise love to fund local efforts such as a FIRST team. You may want to ask parents if they know of any such programs at their place of employment. For our laptops we had a company that gladly donated us four (used) systems that were perfectly functional.

Good luck!
