I agree with Lloyd.  Con:  Extra complexity, more for the kids to learn,
more possibility of things to go wrong.  Pros:  Extra torque or extra speed
if needed.  My take:  I would only suggest gears to the students for an arm
motor if needed.

I can give you my personal perspective.  Only use gears, if you need =
gears.  If you need to gear up or down then it's worth it.  If you don't =
need to gear up or down, they become one more moving part that can go =
wrong and/or cause inconsistency.  I've always liked the idea of =
simplicity, the less things that can go wrong, the better.
