I'm not going to weigh in on the type of app that might make a good solution, however, during the World Class season a FLL team called Team Storm invented an app to teach kids with dyslexia learn to read. They called their app 'Roy G Biv' and they went on to win the Global Innovation Award in 2015 (I think?). This team created some videos that FIRST has on their website about using the Engineering Design Process and in one of them they talk about how they approached this very problem. The video can be found here - Engineering Design Process: Part 3, Design and Prototype The whole video is interesting to watch, but their app starts at about 1:40.

They also made another video about their app - ROY G BIV Video Update January 2016

I hope this helps,Amy

If they have app idea, do what is age appropriate for your team – poster boards, paper mock-ups, etc.   Scott RakestrawVA-DC Judge Advisor    From: "[log in to unmask]" <[log in to unmask]> on behalf of Jeffrey Schoolcraft <[log in to unmask]>

Subject: [VADCFLL-L] Thoughts on team having an app built  My team would like to build an app as their innovative solution to this years project.  It's nothing like sticking an iPhone in dirty water and having the speakers somehow displace contaminants to the bottom.  It's more to help raise awareness and potentially provide support.  My question is: Can they have an app built at their direction and have it count as "their" solution?  The fallback, and maybe even main presentation for judges, would be a poster board sized phone to help simulate the app experience.  They'd still describe their problem and how the app fit into their solution, they just wouldn't have an app.  Thanks,
