I just want to add some clarification on this subject.  The Core Values Poster and the Robot Design Executive Summary WILL be used as part of the Judging of World Festival.  
 
Some other states might have used them as part of their local judging, but we have not been using them in our past regional competitions.  Having saying that, I just want to say they are optional until VADCFLL makes any changes for them to be part of our judging criteria.  
 
For those teams that want to have a leg up on the competition or just want to prepare for winning State and advance to World Festival, I'm attaching the FLL description for these two items here for references.
 
I also want to point out the Question #4 on the Judging FAQ.  To qualify for the Champion's Award, all candidates must also meet the following requirements:  
 
(1) Robot: The team must score in the top 40% of all teams participating in the Robot Game at the event. 
(2) Project: The team must complete all parts of the Project, including the identification of a real world problem related to the Challenge theme, creation of an innovative solution and sharing their research and solution with others, as well as any other season-specific requirements that may exist. 
(3) Core Values: The team must adhere to all Core Values throughout the event and the season.
 
It is not only about creating an innovative solution, but the team needs to share their research and solution with other.  The other note is that during the tournament, we sometime have roaming judge that wondering through the complex observing team members' core values and gracious professionalism.  It might not look too well if he/she seeing coach/adult fixing robot or rewriting codes instead of the kids doing the work.

Hi new coaches,
 
There are no requirements for the "Core Value Poster" or the "Robot Performance executive summary".  These would be helpful but not mandatory for the competition.  
 
It's up to each team to decide what and how to present themselves during each of the three (3) judging sessions: Core Values, Project, and Robot Design.  The kids should be creative, innovative, and last but not least simple have FUN!
 
Each session is judged base on the corresponding rubrics (attached).  Some teams in the past might have use a poster to show team spirit and team identity during core values session or for opening/closing teams parade.  Other teams did this using their costume, t-shirts, etc.  Some team wrote executive summary for their robot design, other printed out their codes for presentation, or show them on their laptop.  Some team even did CAD design and presented their design booklet.  But be aware that judges might question, did the 9-14 years old "Kids Do the Work"?  Sometime we do have software engineer, scientist, MIT/JMU/GMU... alumni judging those Robot Design sessions, and they frown upon -- did adult do the work!  But not to worry, we always give the benefit of the doubt to the kids.
 
The best recommendation is to give the rubrics to the kids and have they rated their own presentations to see how they can get their team from the "Accomplished" column to the "Exemplary" column to win those awards.  You can find more information on the FLL website at: http://www.firstlegoleague.org/event/judging.

If I remember correctly, you should expect to see something soon from the Virginia/DC Head Judges discussing a Core Values poster as a helpful, optional aid to teams.

In past years, I have seen discussion on this list about what types of information are helpful to have to discuss with the Robot Design judges, but I don't recall any particular mention of using the robot Executive Summary.
