Water that goes down a storm drain is stormwater, not wastewater.

Many people are curious about the difference between stormwater and wastewater. Here are some definitions:
Stormwater consists of rain or property drainage (via irrigation). Stormwater can be funneled into ditches, storm sewers and rivers. In our area, stormwater eventually drains into the Huron River, or the Raisin River, without receiving any treatment.
Wastewater is the water disposed of in sinks, toilets, and floor drains by households and businesses. State and Federal regulations require that wastewater receive proper treatment before being released into the environment. Most wastewater in the YCUA service area is collected by sanitary sewers for treatment at the WWTP.
Treated wastewater is called effluent.

Hi Amy,
Do you mean rainwater that goes down a storm drain? If so, then I think I would also interpret it that way, because it sounds like they want that human component in it. If you mean disposing of water that humans have used and then that water going down storm drains, then that might be different. You can email the Project team at FIRST. At the bottom of the page that has all of the links for the Challenge, there are email addresses for questions on different topics. The email for Project questions is [log in to unmask]

Hi All...
I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the new Project Update that came out yesterday? The guidance update says:
"Since this definition explains the path that water takes when utilized by humans, water “disposal” here refers to “wastewater,” or water that has already been used by humans in homes, industries, and businesses."
This seems to eliminate the means of water disposal through storm drains. Does this sound right?
Or does anyone know who I can email to ask?
Thanks much!
