A SE Asian immigrant family would like to get their third-grader (now eight years old) involved in FLL. Apparently he can't participate this year, but would have to wait for next year, when he will be nine (in June). The family cannot possibly figure out how to get involved from the information on-line. They are working nights and multiple jobs and can't handle the complexities of this listserv and trying to organize a new team. The little boy is very VERY bright, e.g., reading at a 6th grade level in late 1st grade, and he seems to have an aptitude for robotics (was fastest kid in the group when he took a robotics weekend class at the Math Science Innovation Center). The family's mentor (myself) has moved out of state, so can't organize a team.

How can the family get the little boy involved? Someone suggested going to some of the competitions just to watch, but even that, while it would provide some incentive to persist in trying to get into the program, won't tell them how to do it when they (1) don't have the time to take on a leadership role; (2) don't have the organizational or language skills or the education to start a new team.

Can anyone give me some advice, some specific contacts, some specific events/dates/places/times that they could attend? They live on Mayland Drive in western Henrico County, and the boy attends Skipwith School.

Thanks

Robin Crane
