I want to add my expression of sadness and loss over the news about Val
Plumwood and condolences to her close friends on this list.

Colleagues now retired from my department helped her and R. Sylvan work
on the house at Plumwood (as did anyone who visited them at that time, I
suppose) and I personally was lucky enough to share a wonderful day with
her and Will Aiken (whom we also lost too soon) hiking in the mountains
here in Colorado, several years ago now. It was a day that I remember
vividly for its easy cameraderie, the humor and wisdom she shared, the
beautiful story of her recently adopted wombat and the joys of being a
"wombat mommy" (not to mention her great stamina). She left a strong
impression on my two young children, who to this day also have vivid
memories of her warmth and strength.

Her work is always in the back of my mind in my own philosophical
pursuits; it has been one of my feminist moral compasses.

I hope it is not inappropriate to share my daughter's reply when I sent
her the sad news about Val; It captures something important, I think, as
seen through the eyes of a (then) young girl:

>>I remember val plumwood. she was very jolly. she wore purple and she
laughed loudly. i liked her, and yes, she gave us pennywhistles. was it
really a snake?
