Dear Blake,
The APA Newsletter on Feminism and Philosophy's next issue, due out in Sept/Oct, will be devoted to this subject, if you can wait that long. But there are also other sources available now, including Sally Haslanger's ground breaking analysis of 7 major philosophical journals in Hypatia, 2008.
Sally's article (as well as her contribution to the upcoming Newsletter issue) is also available on her website at

Subject: Resources on Women's Publishing in Academia?
Hello there,
I am wondering if anyone can direct me to information regarding women in academia and publishing.
I am based in Japan, and some of the faculty in our department are currently trying to increase the number of women faculty because it is extremely low (we have only 13%, which is the national average-this includes tenured and contract teachers).
Many of our older, conservative faculty members are against anything that hints at affirmative action. They want the best candidate (for them this means the person with the most publications), and think that that hiring women or widening the criteria beyond the number of publications will result in a less qualified candidate, and therefore a lowering of the quality of our department. As our department is currently in the process of hiring 7 full time faculty this year, and another 7 next year, timing is everything!
If anyone can direct me to specific academic articles that show that this is not the case can you please email me at this email address: [log in to unmask]
Sincerely,
Blake
