Check the game updates. I can't quote it exactly right now, but they have made allowances for that.

Greg, this looks like a problem with the construction of the mission model, or the board setup, or both. 
Take a look at the robot game video, you may be able to see the differences there for more info. 

The plane should be resting on the wire (which is wound to tight btw), the tail of the plane is held back loosely by a cross bar, and the red axel connectors which point downwards. 

Good luck, you'll get it right, I'm sure.
