Hello Folks,
The recent conversations about the visibility of older philosophers sparked an interesting non-theoretical exchange between Judy Andre and myself.
I am in need academic robes because my college is very fond of regalia, parades, and fancy-dress-up-events. To underline the point, consider that graduation at Washington College not only involves all the faculty in robes, it includes a 6-foot-six George Washington impersonator, on horseback. (The horse usually objects to the whole business.)
So I wrote to Judy Andre, who is now retired, asking if she might like to pass her robes to another feminist. I like the idea of this because the robes of an emerita feminist have more meaning for me than just robes on a hanger. Further, I'm good at making jam and baked treats, which is how I intend to thank Judy. The whole approach is more personal than going online and choosing whatever company makes robes for graduations and choirs. Also, I had reservations about robes in general, owing to Daly's critique of the ceremonial robes of the patriarchs, etc.
Robes passed from feminist to feminist... for me that is a uniform become good luck charm.
Others on the FEAST list open to the idea?
