Unfortunately, you have run into what we ran into. This is a known issue with older NXT bricks. I work with two programs that have a total of four robots. This year when we unpacked them, two of them had a screen problem. If you bought them through LEGO Education, call LEGO Education Technical Support at 866-349-5346 and they may offer to replace it for free (although you have to mail in the old one and the turnaround can be 1-2 weeks). If you have a retail version NXT, call LEGO Mindstorms Technical Support at 877-680-2800. Sorry for the bad news.
