What a wonderful state champion tournament!!  We were a rookie team of 4th & 5th graders, not knowing what to expect.   The tournament was amazingly organized for an event with such a large number of people.  It was high energy and exciting.  Our team has loads of fun enjoying the competition, looking at & learning from the other teams robots,  swapping trinkets with other teams, and of course, the snowball fights and hotel swimming pool put the icing on the cake! J  I want to say congratulations to all the winning  teams!   And last and most important,  I want to express a gigantic THANK YOU to all the volunteers & sponsors who make this happen!!!

All of the hard work and preparation were very much in evidence at every step of the tournament, which ran smoothly despite the inclement weather. And congratulations and kudos to all the teams -- as ever, we came away impressed at the innovative ideas on display at the tables and in the pit. We had a lot of "aha!" moments. And it was great seeing some old friends again from around the state. Finally, a thank you to everyone who brought or signed cards for our "Holiday Mail for Heroes" campaign -- over 800 cards are on their way to the Red Cross for delivery to troops overseas, their families at home, and veterans around the country. Thank You! This is the Scream Team's last tournament, as they age out of Woodlawn and FLL, but with luck and hard work, you'll see the Mini Cougar Bots again next year. On a personal note, we also would love to thank Susan and Bill Dunkins of the award of the same name (My apology if I do not have your name correct) for introducing us to this experience through a Smithsonian summer camp. I had been thinking about that actually. I have a few questions about upgrading when it comes to software and firmware. Would anyone have any advice for me on this? 1) Is it better to just stick with what we are using now? We are currently using software v1.1 and firmware 1.05, on Windows XP. This has worked well for us. However, I have read that you can't easily install it onto a computer with Windows 7. 2) So, do we just keep using what we have and keep using Windows XP? It has seemed to work well for us so far. But we do have a new laptop that has Windows 7. 3) If we upgrade to 2.0, and put it on a computer with Windows 7, will we need to just use that one computer with Windows 7? And not try to go back and forth between XP and 7? 4) If we upgrade to 2.0, can we also still use the brick we currently have, as long as we download the proper firmware version onto it? This year, we have sometimes used two different laptops, both with the same software versions and XP, so it didn't seem to be a problem switching back and forth at times in the middle of writing a program. More FLL info and judge sign-up can be found at the MD First site at  http://www.mdfirst.org/MD/index.htm.

FLL Judge training is available at ftp://forums.usfirst.org/  Make sure you use Internet explorer for this site.  The username is ftpjudge and the password is ftpJudge (note the capital J in the password).  After you log in, click on "Judges", =>"Smart Move Materials", => download and print the "Judges Handbook + Rubrics".
Then click on "Training" and "General Judge Training".  Click on "2009 Judge Training -LoFi.pdf" and read the slides (should only take about 10 minutes for returning judges).  A form should be on the MDFirst website soon for you to certify that you have completed the judges training.

As you well know, these competitions are fun and exciting, and what FLL teams accomplish is nothing short of amazing.  Most importantly, the skills these kids learn during these competitions will last a lifetime.  Your support as a judge is critical to the success of the MD FLL program.

Hope to hear from you very soon.

We look forward to seeing the finished product. I think your video will be beneficial to all who watch it. This project supports the ideas of gracious professionalism and the FLL Core Values. It will provide the opportunity to learn from others, to become familiar with teams throughout the state, and to appreciate the work and accomplishments of others. This is a fun way to document the experience. During the weekend teams mostly focus on their own schedule and work to be completed. We don't always have time to see all that is going on. This project gives us an opportunity to look beyond our team and have a bigger view of the tournament weekend and all that was accomplished this season. This video will also be helpful to new coaches and team members, as it will provide them with more information about FLL. It also shares the State Championship experience with others who weren't able to be there this year. Thank you for doing this project. I know from my own video editing experience that it takes a lot of time to put something like this together. I think the best reward to an adult is - when the kids grow up after many years they will still have some wonderful memory on this activity.

I'm still working on something that may help them to trigger the memory for years coming :-))

Hi Jin,

Our other coach, ***, made a DVD.  I have not got it yet.  I emailed him asking him to mail you a copy.  I am not sure if he is in town.  If he cannot get to it, I will make a copy for you after I receive it this weekend.

Thank you so much for your effort.  My team really moved up a level after meeting you.  Beyond the technical help, the kids were touched by your genuine enthusiasm of the subject.  You really brought out the best of them.
