Those terms are synonymous in our area.  We have "regional tournaments" and a state-wide (plus DC now) "championship tournament" that people just refer to as "state's" - as in "We're going to State's!".

Roughly 25% of the teams that compete at the regional level are invited to the championship tournament at JMU.  Generally only one team from the championship tournament is invited to compete at "World's" against championship teams from around the world.

From what I've heard, some areas have so few teams that they only have the championship tournament.

Hope that clears things up!

What is the difference between state and championship?  Does a team that qualifies for stste, later compete for championship round?

To all teams qualifying for the Championship Tournament on 4-5 December:

Stay calm, and check your schedules.  Wait for an information e-mail in the next few days to tell you about registration, lodging, activities, schedules, etc.
