Those terms are synonymous in our area.
We have "regional tournaments" and a state-wide (plus DC now) "championship
tournament" that people just refer to as "state's" - as in "We're going to
State's!".
Roughly 25% of the teams that compete at the
regional level are invited to the championship tournament at JMU.
Generally only one team from the championship tournament is invited to compete
at "World's" against championship teams from around the world.
From what I've heard, some areas have so few teams
that they only have the championship tournament.
