This is my 7th year coaching and I've never had a team that thought they were ready - Including the year we went to state.  There is always something more to do.

You get 40 points by walking up to the table and setting the robot down.  My first year, you could get 28. There was a team at that regional that scored 6, 12 and 16 points (YOU got 28 for doing nothing), but they were there and I'll bet if you asked them, they were glad they came.  Learn from the  Jamaican bobsled team : show up and compete.  You'll be glad you did and disappointed if you don't.

Last year was our first year competing- we learned more, and accomplished more, in that one day then we had in the weeks leading up to it. I agree that not showing up is far worse then being under-prepared.

Every year, teams tend to drop out of events for some reason or another, and usually a week or two prior to the competition they were scheduled for. This is something that shouldn't happen unless there is a real-world issue. If it is about the robot, the project, or the programming, teams should still compete. It is an experience like no other, and they won't get another chance in the current season. Meeting goals is part of the learning process, and even if teams are not ready, they learn something through attending and participating.

Just my 2 cents...
