My understanding (from the call with the game designer) is
that it has to be made by Lego; therefore, Hitechnic would not be
approved.

How do officials determine whether or not a sensor may be
used in the competition?
There are a couple of vendors like
Hitechnic that sell "certified" sensors. LEGO has recently started
reselling some of these sensors.
So, if our team was to purchase a
gyroscopic sensor, how would the officials determine whether or not that
sensor may be used?
