You want to go to www.bricklink.com. It is an online marketplace for used an new LEGO pieces.

 

They mostly use the part numbers stamped on the plastic pieces for their catalog but things like string get assigned special codes. In this case “x77” is used for string and additional codes are appended to that for different variations (and lengths). Try a catalog search using “x77*” to catch them all (e.g., http://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?q=x77%2A).

 

When looking to buy, search “Items for sale” for the part number you want. You can narrow your search (using “Show More Filter Options”) to sellers in the US to avoid paying shipping from halfway across the world (e.g. http://www.bricklink.com/search.asp?pg=1&colorID=11&itemID=75321&sz=25&searchSort=P ). When you place an order, the person running that “store” will usually have it to you within a week.

 

This is also a great resource for special wheels and other parts!

 

As a side note, using string to lift things may or may not work well. There are other options such as a chain drive or worm gear that they may wish to think about.

Does anyone know where I can get some lego brand string? The kids on my team have chosen to build a forklift robot and it requires some string. I didn't have any luck at lego.com.
