Nari,

I actually called Lego Education about buying additional licenses because I didn't know about the FIRST policy, and the gentleman I got on the phone simply asked if I'd bought the software through FIRST. When I said yes, he said we could download it to all the kids' computers. I pointed out that it didn't say so in any of the license documentation that came with the software and he just replied: "Yeah, I know..."

I wasn't smart enough to ask about potential update problems but that is the response we got.

Best,

Haydee

There is a conflict between the Lego Education licence (which is a single user license - a mistake?) and the FIRST statement of a 10-user license on their website (as earlier noted in this forum).

If you are happy with the shelter of the FIRST umbrella, download the software to a memory key as Nick has suggested and install on multiple team computers.

If you want to be a stickler for the law, you can get yourself a site license from LEGO education -  this is what we plan to do, as we have no idea if the software is self disabling after a time period, or what would happen when the software updates (it uses Microsoft Silverlight) etc., and a site license is not that expensive in the grand scheme of things.

I also think that it would be a good thing when teaching kids to become programmers, to respect the intellectual property rights of the creators, resisting the natural human impulse to copy software.  I don'talways agree with what the law is, but until we change it ...

Best,
Nari

Nick,

I did that.  I then went into the application and sent the emails.  Eventually, they showed the emails I sent inviations to and they were marked with Pending or Accepted.  I sat with one boy who showed Accepted.  We cleared his computer and tried to download repeatedly.  I even tried my ID on his.  My question  would be, once you download does it prohibit another download by the same user?

The process to download the software is confusing.

We were able to accomplish it by registering at www.legoeducation.com.  While still logged in we went to the site specified on the registration paperwork (www.legoeducation.com/educationdownloads ) enter the activation code and wait for the e-mail (check your spam folder).  Clicking on the link in the e-mail led to a successful download of the software.

When you get it downloaded, the “exe” or “dmg” files can be copied on a jump drive and installed on other team computers (assuming you have a team license) so only one person on the team needs to make the download work.

Hi, fellow coaches,

To be brief, I'd like to offer my services to any Northern Virginia FLL teams interested in having a Core Values mentor.

To give a short summary of my history with FLL, I've co-coached a team for the last two seasons, primarily focusing on Core Values and teamwork.  Last year, our team (The Cellar Dwellers) was awarded the Champions Award for Division I at the 2012 VA/DC FLL Championship.  They went on to compete at the California LEGOLand FLL Open Invitational this past May, and were even considered for the Teamwork Award at the national competition.

Before co-coaching, I mentored The Sea Monsters for a season, and before that, I was a competitor for four years.  Every year I was a competitor, my teams (The Sea Monsters and Hakuna Matata) went to the VA/DC FLL State Championship tournament, and during my final year of competition, my team won second place for the Division II Teamwork award at States.

The Cellar Dwellers team members decided to pursue other interests this year.   Since I want to continue to coach, I would like to be a roving Core Values mentor.  I can come to one (or more) of your team's practices, talk about gracious professionalism, go over the core values rubric, perform a teamwork exercise, and give the team constructive criticism as to how they can improve. Core values are vital to FLL.  Whether you're an experienced team or are just starting out, it's always important to include and reflect on the founding ideas of FIRST.

My available time is limited to Sundays and select Saturdays, so if you or your team have any interest, please let me know soon so I can make sure I visit your team. Please email me at [log in to unmask].

Good luck to all of your teams this season!

Thanks,

Natalie Schauer
