quick question, we have a quick, straight piece, setup jig, it actually sits mostly outside base while aiming and then is picked up, and off the table, before the robot is started, is this outside the rules?

Everything that you use on the field must be made of LEGOs, and must fit entirely within Base while you use it. 

In addition, your team may look at the markings on the mat.
