What kind of battery are you using, most importantly, is it fully charged? I've noticed a degradation in behavior when the EV3 rechargeable battery got really low, but not to the degree you describe.

Where are you? We have a spare set of everything, so it might make sense to swap out parts to see what might be the culprit if you're in NOVA.
