> In 2013, only 14% of Computer Science graduates were female₁. The declining number of female engineers and computer scientists is a nationwide problem.
>
> Educational software in the classroom is an important method in introducing computing to girls. However, there is not enough focus on researching what type of content, appearance and structure of educational software appeals to girls the most, specifically to the 13 – 17 year age group.
>
> As part of her research study, Professor Shahnaz Kamberi, a computer science doctoral candidate, is offering FREE all girl Java programming workshops targeted to girls ages 13 – 17.
>
> Students who agree to participate in the workshops will be surveyed before the workshop starts on how much they like programming and will be quizzed on what they already know about programming. After the workshop is over, students will be asked to take a survey again to determine how much they like programming and quizzed to determine how much the workshop has taught them.
>
> Based on the date of the workshop the students will learn Java programming through lecture and hands on exercises or a 2D educational game with an accompanying 3D online virtual world environment.
>
> The workshop is one day only and is only 4 hours long and runs from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. There are only 25 students per workshop.
>
> The same one day workshop is being offered five times to optimize availability. So please just pick ONE date most convenient for you. The workshops are offered on:
>
> August 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th.
>
> The location is: 2450 Crystal Drive, Arlington, Virginia 22202
