I managed to brick my EV-3 while it was in the middle of a firmware update one time.  The instructions listed above worked for me, and I have to think mine was about as bad as it can get (unplugged in the middle of a firmware update)

If the manual firmware update does not make your EV3 Brick work
the first time, repeat the manual update process.
