For the three years that my team was in FLL (we moved up to FTC two seasons ago), we either won first in research or got grand champion, so the research thing is something as a coach I feel very comfortable with.  I wrote up a blog post a few seasons ago about how we went about our process. This is how we did it, so obviously you'll change it to shift to your kids and your style, but one of the most important aspects to me was filming them. You'll never get that quiet kid to realize no one, not even his neighboring teammates, can hear him until he sees it on the "big screen". Plant the camera where the judges will be sitting to view their presentation and roll camera,  It also helps to remind the kids to stay "stage front", aka not with your back to ppl who want to see you. 
Start ASAP on the research collection and idea.
