As Scott said, we'll know the details about what can be included in the robot next week, as well as the specifics of the missions.

FLL is about Science and Technology--we value both expertise and original thinking.  In the Project, we ask teams to reach out and engage with experts, and then to build upon what they learn.  For Robot Design, I wouldn't want to ask teams to work in a knowledge vacuum, but rather to build upon what they know and to test new concepts.

You can download the Animal Allies judging rubrics now at http://www.firstinspires.org/resource-library/fll/judging-rubrics, and the Core Values are at http://www.firstinspires.org/node/3976.
  Judges will look to understand:
- Design Process
- Innovation
- Discovery
- Kids Do the Work

Everybody starts somewhere.  It might be a design out of the Mindstorms book, or with experience gained from building robots before.  As Nick said, what is important is where the team goes from there--how it adapts and changes the robot and the strategy to achieve goals.  That's what I am listening for when I judge.

Thanks for the responses.  I was more concerned about the practice being frowned upon.  These are all the same kids from last year, so I'd like to let them at least start with last year's bot if they want.

Yes – but…

It typically doesn’t make sense to do so.  Scott Evans, the engineer who designs the game, tries really hard to design changes/challenges so that teams NEED to change their design to be competitive.  That’s part of the fun, but there’s no rule that requires you to change the robot.

Subject: [VADCFLL-L] Question on Robot Reuse for non-rookie teams

Hi All,

I have a question regarding robot re-use... specifically:

* Are they allowed to use the same robot base from year to year?

* There are lots of good FLL robots on sites like EV3Lessons.  If my team decides to build one of these robots and then modify it to suit their needs, how does that sit with the judges?  Is there any special 'credit' that they need to give?

Thanks,

Frank Levine
