Folks,

I am no expert, but just my two cents; I think several of your cases remain in scope.  The latest update says, "In order for natural flooding to be a suitable topic, it must be clearly linked to the human water cycle, and a human use of water."  To apply to your cases, washing cars and overwatering home gardens would seem to be cases in scope because humans are explicitly using the water.  However, just because something going into a storm drain does not make it in scope.  E.g. changes in runoff because a field was paved over for a shopping mall would not be in scope, because in that case the water is not being used in that case.

Thanks Sonya! Our kids have been brainstorming ideas for all the ways that we get water and how we dispose of it. Problems like agricultural run-off, washing cars, overwatering home gardens, etc. are things they've been considering, all of which are disposed of in storm drains. The challenge doesn't specify that those types of problems would be outside of the challenge, but the update makes me think they should cross those ideas off their list.

Thanks for the email address. I think I'll write them a note and get their take on it.

Thanks much!
Amy

Hi Amy,
Do you mean rainwater that goes down a storm drain?  If so, then I think I would also interpret it that way, because it sounds like they want that human component in it.  If you mean disposing of water that humans have used and then that water going down storm drains, then that might be different.  You can email the Project team at FIRST.  At the bottom of the page that has all of the links for the Challenge, there are email addresses for questions on different topics.  The email for Project questions is [log in to unmask] org.

Best,
Sonya

Hi All...

I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the new Project Update that came out yesterday? The guidance update says:

"Since this definition explains the path that water takes when utilized by humans, water “disposal” here refers to “wastewater,” or water that has already been used by humans in homes, industries, and businesses."

This seems to eliminate the means of water disposal through storm drains. Does this sound right?

Or does anyone know who I can email to ask?

Thanks much!
