There is a lot the team can do without the challenge set, including robot programming, project research, and core values activities. We are in the same boat waiting for the grant.

Another option is to see if a team is near you and already registered and has their field kit built can share the table.   FLL believes in gracious professional ism and Coopertition.

Welcome to FIRST LEGO League!  You do have to register before you can purchase the Challenge Set, because each team can only purchase one set.  It is not an item that is commercially available.  However, you might try contacting FIRST directly at [log in to unmask]org and let them know your situation.  They might be able to work something out for you.  If you can provide some verification that the grant is coming, that might help.

I can't help but feel like that is putting us behind. Is there a link to a site where I can buy the 2017-2018 field kit myself, so we would at least have something to practice with until our grant is in place? The only option I have for ordering parts through the FIRST team site requires for me to pay for registration first, and that's one of the thiungs the DoD grant has to be used for....
